Key graduate employment findings for Q2 2019

1. Graduate starting salaries on the rise

In terms of starting salary, we saw the average across all sectors marginally decrease from Q1's £25,298, with the average salary now £24,650. However, what has become apparent is that the difference between the highest and lowest starting salary in individual sectors is becoming increasingly less.

Our lowest permanent salary in Q2 was £22,000 which, with London Living Wage (LLW) now paying just over £20,000, is becoming a near hard base line for us to work from. The most popular bracket is £24,000 - £26,000 for a permanent role.

We've seen that companies who offered a salary range ending up paying closer to the top end - a clear indication of the competitiveness of the market.

2. Top sales candidates in demand

As is now often the case, there was a consistent demand for great sales candidates in Q2. Across the board, from FinTech to PR, companies engaged with us to find ambitious, driven graduates who would thrive in client-focused, target-driven roles.

It's interesting to note that we've seen a 16% increase in the number of applications for Sales & Client Services based roles in Q2; even more so for those with a competitive commission structure in place.

3. Graduates are looking for more than salary

In order to stay competitive, companies across the board continued to build upon their benefits packages and additional perks in Q2; offering everything from pool tables and beer fridges, to flexible working policies and travel cards. We already know that these have appeal for graduates; but our communications with over 20,000 candidates in Q2 has given us great insight into what graduates actually look for in a role; and it's different to what you might think.

Increasingly it seems that for graduates, fun work perks are 'nice-to-haves', but are not the main attraction of a role or company. In fact, graduates tend to be far more interested in opportunities for training and development, and being able to see clear career progression.
