Types of Business Management degree
There are various types of degree’s that specialise in Business, each dependent on the University you are applying to. Here are some of the courses that Business is taught under:
- International Business
- Business Management
- Business Administration
- Accountancy
- Industrial Economics
However, if you wish to mainly focus on just Business, Business Management, Business Administration and International Business are your best choices.

Duration of a Business Management degree
A Business Management course is usually three to four years long depending on if you take a placement year or a year abroad.
Taking a placement year has many advantages, especially to Business management undergraduate degrees.
For example, spending a year in industry and learning more about other aspects of business can help you realise what modules you would like to specialise in during your final year, and even help you decide a dissertation topic.

What to expect each year of Business Management degree for a four-year course
- Year one – Usually does not count to your final qualification it is like an introductory year to your course but use this to practise what exam techniques you should use in your upcoming years.
- Year two – You usually do not get to pick these modules a lot are compulsory which is why it is important to check out which modules are dependent on the University because this will count towards your degree. For instance, if you know you are more creative than numerically minded it is better to pick a course that specialises more in these types of modules second year. Yet personal tutors and your lecturers are there to support you throughout the process.
- Year three – Placement Year where you get the opportunity to work for a company in a business related role. Or you may have the option to spend a year learning business abroad at a different University.
- Year four – Final year modules which usually you can pick yourself based on your favourite modules. This is where usually majority of your grade counts dependent on the University grading system. You will also most likely have to write a dissertation.

Business Management essay and exams
When researching your course this is an important factor to consider, as some universities may offer courses with more group work and coursework-based modules, whilst some may focus on more exam-based modules.
Have a think about where your skills lie and where you’ve performed best academically in the past, you want to do as best as you can during your degree, so be tactical and choose a course at a university where you will be able to do this.
