World Youth Skills Day: What did you used to aspire to be?

Today is World Youth Skills Day, and we want to know what you aspired to be when you were younger! What better way to find this out than with a competition? But firstly, before we get onto that, let’s find out more about World Youth Skills Day…

What is World Youth Skills Day?

The United Nations marked the 15th July as World Youth Skills Day, to raise global awareness about the importance of youth skills development. This day aims to contribute to reducing youth underemployment and unemployment worldwide by emphasising the need for development of skills in young people

“Today, there are 1.2 billion young people aged 15 to 24 years, accounting for 16% of the global population. The active engagement of youth in sustainable development efforts is central to achieving sustainable, inclusive and stable societies by the target date, and to averting the worst threats and challenges to sustainable development, including the impacts of climate change, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, conflict, and migration. However, young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and continuously exposed to lower quality of jobs, greater labour market inequalities, and longer and more insecure school-to-work transitions. In addition, women are more likely to be underemployed and under-paid, and to undertake part-time jobs or work under temporary contracts.” (United Nations 2019)

This year, Give A Grad A Go have decided to get involved with the World Youth Skills Day activities and initiatives by launching our own competition to highlight the importance of inspiring and educating young people.

Competition results: what did you aspire to be when you were younger?

A big thank you to everyone that entered our World Youth Skills Day competition, helping us to raise awareness and inspire young people across the UK.

The results are in... *drum roll please*... We asked you what you aspired to be when you were younger… and these were the top 5 professions you chose:

  1. Police officer
  2. Dancer
  3. Vet
  4. Nurse/ Doctor
  5. Teacher

We had some very strange aspirations, including a wizard, a dishwasher!? And our personal favourite… A teddy tester, to make sure they were soft enough to go into stores!
