For the first time, we headed to Newcastle University to visit members of the university’s Investment Society. We ran a unique joint event with Rob Woods, the Commercial Director of the Certificate of Finance & Technology, who brought along his wealth of knowledge of financial services and led an exciting trading game evening.
This was a market-making exercise that was designed as a simulation of quote-driven trading. Working in teams, each person took on the role of either a market maker (who made prices) a trader (trading within the trading pit), or a bank office individual. Along with the time pressure, what kept these students on their toes was the asset being traded – the total value of two dice being rolled 5 times.
It was fantastic seeing everyone so eager to get involved and completely throw themselves into the exercise. The evening was not not only fun for students, but also gave them the perfect opportunity to get a realistic glimpse into what it is like to work within trading.
Next week, we will be continuing our travels and stopping by the University of Edinburgh, so stay tuned!
