I work with such a huge a variety of clients that it's hard to pinpoint my particular area of expertise! But I particularly enjoy finding graduates a job they love in an area they hadn't originally thought about.

The worst job I've had

My worst job has to be when I was a security guard at a (now in administration) shoe warehouse. At 5"3 it was pretty bleak. My months' trial resulted in more shoes being stolen than ever before.

Job description

In this varied Operations & Finance Assistant graduate job, you will be joining the company's finance team, working predominantly on invoicing, reconciliation and supplier statements. Day to day, your role will also involve providing exceptional support to both the Purchase Ledger Supervisor and the wider finance team. You will also need to be versatile, as you’ll get stuck in with the preparation of marketing materials / and support the marketing team with company events. You will need to be a proactive and highly organised graduate with some experience using accounting software, as you will be essential to the successful running of the finance department within this growing business.

Key responsibilities

In this Operations & Finance Assistant graduate job, your responsibilities will include:

Finance

  • Processing incoming supplier invoices – obtaining approvals and arranging payments
  • Creating customer invoices each month – with total accuracy and discretion
  • Taking charge of bank reconciliations and data analysis

Operations

  • Providing general administrative support – taking charge of all staff travel, including flights and hotel bookings
  • Collecting and welcoming clients into the building reception, showing them to meeting rooms
  • Taking charge of client enquiries – answering the phone in a clear and concise manner
  • Helping with event planning – ie. You get to choose where the Christmas party is held

Job requirements

  • A 2.1 in a numerate subject – Accounting and Finance degrees are preferred
  • Attention to detail is a must – accuracy is essential in this role
  • Excel experience – you will know your VLookups
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Someone who performs well under pressure, and has the ability to maintain high levels of accuracy & adhere to high standards of quality when working to tight deadlines
  • Someone who is proactive and willing to take on more responsibility as and when needed
  • Great team working skills and a conscientious approach

  • Weekly Reporting – Working alongside other finance team members to deliver our weekly Trade reporting on a Monday morning
  • Month End – Taking ownership and responsibility for key account lines within the PnL, in particular CAPEX and IT
  • Ownership of Fixed Assets and depreciation postings ensuring accuracy and underlying ledgers and registers are correct
  • Ownership of Capex reporting, ensuring aligned monthly reporting and full year forecast

Commercial Analysis

  • Supporting ad hoc analysis across the channels: sales, costs and profitability as required

Business Partnering

  • Building relationships and business partnering across the business to enable a mutual understanding of financial impacts and projections

Planning and Forecasting

  • Supporting the annual Budget and Reforecast process, delivering owned account lines and analysis.
  • Ad hoc reporting and analysis
  • Review and redesign of reporting, when appropriate, to ensure value-add outputs
  • Preparation of other ad hoc analysis as and when required
  • Support of wider finance team where appropriate

Job requirements

  • A 2.1 or above from a top university.
  • Ideally part qualified in some accountancy exams, but not necessary
  • Experienced working with numbers and ideally some experience in retail sector
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all outputs
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work well both within finance and across the business at all levels
  • A proactive team player
